Competitive Comparison

Why Choose ActivTrak Over Hubstaff?

Hubstaff is an employee monitoring tool primarily focused on time tracking for payroll processing and basic activity monitoring for contractors and small teams.

By contrast, ActivTrak’s workforce analytics solution is purpose-built to help organizations maximize productivity and optimize team performance with comprehensive analytics and insights that respect employee privacy.

Comparing ActivTrak vs. Hubstaff

Feature ActivTrak Hubstaff

Monitoring capabilities

Complete work visibility
Capture online and offline digital activity including productivity, focus, efficiency, meeting time and schedule adherence.

Basic monitoring for billable hour tracking
Focuses primarily on monitoring hours worked for payroll processing rather than productivity improvement.

Calendar integration

Calendar integration fills visibility gaps
Seamlessly integrates with calendar systems to capture offline meetings without disrupting workflows or requiring manual entry.

Relies on manual input for offline activities
Lacks built-in calendar integration, forcing employees to manually log time spent away from their computers, which can be distracting and inaccurate.

Activity classification

Flexible activity classification
Classify work by custom categories (sales, support, research, meetings, etc.) enabling detailed workforce analytics beyond simple productive/unproductive metrics.

Productive/unproductive classification only
Limited to simple productive/unproductive classification with no ability to categorize work by function, department or custom business categories.

Location tracking / GPS

Location-based productivity insights
Automatically detect office vs. remote work with built-in analytics to evaluate policy compliance and determine where employees work most effectively.

Invasive GPS location tracking
Primarily focused on invasive GPS tracking for field workers rather than analyzing productivity by location or supporting hybrid work policies.

Team data and analytics

Team and org-wide analysis
Compare productivity across teams and departments and measure progress against goals.

Single worker view only
Lacks basic features for analyzing team productivity trends, capacity planning or goal setting.

Built-in tools for managers

Manager tools for improving team productivity
AI-driven insights help managers identify coaching opportunities and improve team efficiency.

Not designed for productivity improvement
Lacks tools for managers to identify patterns and engage with employees to improve performance.

Schedule automation

Automated schedule adherence
Automatically tracks schedule compliance with real-time exception alerts and comprehensive reporting.

Manual schedule tracking required
Requires manual schedule adherence monitoring and lacks automated exception reporting or intelligent alerts.

User interface and design

Easy implementation for enterprises
Reliable, lightweight data collection agent deploys in minutes, easily integrates with Entra ID, SCIM and calendars for setup, and supports silent deployment for all devices. VPN and firewall compatible.

Difficult and complex to deploy
Limited support for VPN, firewall and identity management integration, making enterprise deployment challenging.

Plans and pricing

Offers a free plan that includes up to 3 users and 30 days of data history. The premium Professional plan offers affordability and flexibility for larger teams.

Common Hubstaff complaints

To provide an objective perspective, we analyzed verified user reviews from independent platforms like G2 and Capterra. The following points highlight recurring challenges and limitations reported by actual Hubstaff customers.

Slow support and hidden costs

Support is slow and often unhelpful, providing canned answers that don’t address specific issues. Many features are add-ons requiring additional payment, making it costly. The interface is less intuitive compared to competitors… Reporting limitations include an inability to create reports for colleagues who haven’t logged time. G2 Insightful review

Flawed “mouse-movement” tracking

Hubstaff is effective until it comes to meetings where you may not be moving your mouse. It would be nice if there was a way to separate meeting time out from the rest of the workday. Once I was on a meeting and Hubstaff deleted an hour of time due to inactivity, because it was a meeting that I was not speaking or presenting during. Then my workday looked like I worked an hour less. G2 Insightful review

Poor service quality

I find Hubstaff’s software to be the worst. They just charge people money without providing proper service. In my case, when I reached out to support, I was told they keep the money to ‘improve’ their service — which honestly sounded laughable. It’s disappointing to pay for a service that doesn’t meet expectations. G2 Insightful review

Buggy features and notification spam

…A lot of the features are not working, and I am still waiting on support to rectify them, including my inbox, which makes it extremely difficult for me to track my own tasks and organise my day. Notifications have been turned off several times in organisation and personal settings, but everyone is still being slammed with emails… Capterra Insightful review

Deceptive billing practices

The company is misleading, the invoicing is a nightmare, and they think it’s ok to rip people off with erroneous billing on an annual basis and poor support. BUYER BEWARE! Capterra Insightful review

Unresponsive technical Support

I used to like Hubstaff until I had a problem with it not working. I tried to resolve it with customer service, but they are very poor at responding to your inquiries, and they don’t have voice support. Imagine having technology but no one to walk you through to fix the issue. Capterra Insightful review
