ActivTrak User Guide

Policies for Data Storage

Log File Retention

By default, ActivTrak retains Workstation Logs for a period of six months. When the seventh month begins the data from the oldest month is deleted. To modify the data retention period, an administrator may set the following policy value:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Birch Grove\ActivTrak\MaxLogFiles= N

where N is a DWORD representing the number of months.

Log File Location

By default, the ActivTrak Agent stores log data on the local workstation. Administrators can specify an alternate location such as a network folder with the following policy value:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Birch Grove\ActivTrak\LogFolder= [Alternate storage location parent folder]

UNC names are acceptable. Each computer will create a subfolder here to store it's data. The computer account must have modify rights to the parent folder. If the folder does not exist, or the computer does not have adequate rights, the ActivTrak service will store the log data in the standard location on the workstation and an error will be written to the computer's application event log. The ActivTrak service must be restarted for changes in this policy to take effect.

Hint:  Storing Workstation Logs on network shares has the advantage of making the logs accessible to the Viewer even when the client workstation is offline. The logs can be opened with the File/Open pulldown in the ActivTrak Viewer.
